Key Features of WesternCare Enterprise’s SDA Housing

WesternCare Enterprise’s SDA housing is designed to support participants who need specialised accommodations, offering features that go beyond standard housing. These features often include:

  • Accessibility: The home is designed with wide doorways, ramps, and other features to accommodate wheelchair users or those with mobility challenges.

  • Assistive Technologies: Some properties are fitted with technologies that assist with communication, mobility, and health needs, like voice-activated devices or monitoring systems.

  • Higher Support Needs: SDA is suitable for people who require around-the-clock support or have very high support needs. This could include physical support, behavioral support, or health-related care.

  • Security and Safety: Features like secure entry points, emergency call systems, and design elements that minimize risks of injury.

Types of SDA Design

There are different categories of SDA to cater to various levels of need that we assist participants with:

  1. High Physical Support:

    • Designed for people who have significant physical disabilities and require full-time assistance with mobility, personal care, and other daily activities.

    • Homes in this category typically include ceiling hoists, specialized furniture, and more robust safety features.

  2. Improved Liveability:

    • These homes are designed to be more accessible for people with disabilities but don’t require as much intensive support.

    • They might include features like wider doors, lower kitchen counters, and enhanced lighting.

  3. Robust:

    • For people with very high behavioral support needs who might require additional safety features and secure spaces within their home.

    • Homes in this category might include safety features to prevent damage, like reinforced walls, and designs to minimize risks of injury.

  4. Fully Accessible:

    • For individuals with severe mobility impairments, these homes have accessible layouts and may have features such as wheelchair access throughout, spacious bathrooms, and other mobility-friendly facilities.

Eligibility for SDA

To be eligible for SDA, NDIS participants must meet specific criteria related to their disability and support needs. This includes:

  • Having significant or extreme functional impairment or high support needs.

  • Requiring specialist accommodation due to their disability.

  • SDA funding is provided as part of the NDIS plan if it is deemed necessary to help a participant live more independently.

How SDA Funding Works

SDA funding is part of the NDIS funding package for eligible participants, but it’s a separate allocation specifically for housing. It’s not the same as general NDIS funding, which covers other supports like therapy, personal care, and transport.

The funding can help participants access:

  • Newly built SDA properties: These are newly designed homes built specifically for NDIS participants with high support needs.

  • Existing SDA properties: These are older homes that have been modified to meet SDA standards.

Participants who are eligible for SDA funding can either:

  • Live in SDA housing: Where the funding is used to pay for rent or the lease of an SDA property.

  • Live in non-SDA housing: In some cases, the SDA funding can be used for modifications to an existing home to make it suitable.

And that is where we come in to ensure participants have access to existing and newly built SDA Properties.

How to Apply for SDA

To apply for SDA, the following steps generally need to be followed:

  1. Assessment of Needs: The individual’s disability and support needs must be assessed. This can be done by the NDIS planner or a healthcare professional.

  2. Request for SDA in NDIS Plan: If the assessment shows that SDA is required, the participant’s NDIS plan will include SDA funding.

  3. Finding SDA Housing: Once SDA funding is approved, the individual or their support coordinator will need to find suitable SDA housing. This could include both newly built or existing homes, depending on availability and need.
